I am a big fan of social bookmarking. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t add to my huge collection on Delicious. But recently my online research is not just for blogging but for academic papers. So I have taken a look at three great free tools for social bookmarking that will let me register a wide range of bibliographic information. These tools also facilitate online research collaboration and networking.

Zotero
Zotero is developed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. It is a Firefox plug-in and the interface is available in more than 30 languages.
Once it is installed, Zotero is available by clicking the Zotero logo in the bottom right corner of your browser window. This brings up a 3 pane registering box. By entering information in this box you can gather, organize, and analyze sources like citations, full texts, web pages, images, and other [...]

The rumor has it Microsoft is pondering a search engine name change. Does Kumo sound better than Live to you?
Pandia has repeatedly argued that Microsoft’s search engine branding strategy has been a disaster.
MSN Search was not exactly poetic, but people did at least know MSN.
Then it became Windows Live Search, although the search engine didn’t have much to do with the operating system per se and the name was therefore utterly confusing. It finally ended up as Live Search.
Live Search isn’t exactly a bad brand, but it has failed to connect with the general public. This is, we believe, one reason Microsoft tried so hard to get hold of Yahoo. Yahoo! remains a strong search brand.
In August Mary Jo Foley of ZD Net wrote that Microsoft was testing three possible names, namely Hook, Bing and Kumo. Kumo either means “spider” in Japanese, cf. the old Lycos search engine, [...]

Keep in mind that social websites vary and appeal to different audiences. Study the social website to determine the kinds of stories that attract the most attention and interest. If it were easy to predict what would be successful there would be a whole lot of rich people in the world. Determining what will or will not be successful in business is not an easy task, and the same is true for predicting what will be most effective when it comes to social bookmarking.

Europeana has been marketed as Europe’s move to counter Google Book Search, thought by some eurocrats to have an American or Anglo-centric bias. When the prototype was launched on 20 November it crashed. What will you find when the site re-opens and will it be worth the wait?
At the moment of writing, visiting Europeana brings the following message: “We are doing our utmost to reopen Europeana in a more robust version as soon as possible. We will be back by mid-December.”
10 million hits an hour were too much for it.
This is surprising. Why were they not prepared for the traffic? And why should it take three weeks to fix whatever ails Europeana?
This doesn’t bode well for this much awaited product. But there is hope.

The Europeana project is funded by the European Commission and is a partnership of 90 representatives of heritage and knowledge organisations and IT experts [...]

Google SearchWiki launched this week. It is Google’s way of making search a more interactive experience. We tell you how it works, how we like it and what the wider implications are for searching and search engine marketing.
How it works
Now you can customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results.
When logged in to your Google account, little icons appear next to every item in the search results: Clicking the arrow icon lets you move the results you like to the top of the search results (called promoting).
If you find results you consider irrelevant, clicking the x icon removes it from the search results altogether. And if there is a site you like that doesn’t show up, a link at the bottom of the page lets you add it.
The next time you do the same search, Google remembers your previous choices and the site you promoted [...]

Whether you are a search engine optimiser, a web master or you simply want to know how search engines work, you need to know about Google page rank. This article explains how Google determines trusted sites and elaborates on some of the factors in detail including the PageRank algorithm.

Special feature for Pandia by Lammo.net
Page rank, an introduction
Google uses the ‘page rank algorithm’ amongst many other factors to determine which web pages are displayed at the top of search results. Expressed in a range from 0 to 10, the algorithm essentially ‘confers’ ranking from one page to another. Thus, for example, if a page rank 6 page links to you and there are no other external links on that page your page potentially gets a page rank boost of up to 4.8 (only a maximum of around 0.8 of the page’s own rank can be conferred). The reality is that the [...]

As the saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Here is a tool for all those people that find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than google it for themselves.
Your friend asks you a question he could just as easily have found an answer to in Google, e.g. “what is the size of the web?”. Don’t let it ruin your mood! This is a simple and convenient (and fun) tool that will teach him to search and provide him with a lifetime of knowledge:
Type the question into the search box at Let me google that for you. In return you receive a URL that you can send to your inquisitive friend. This URL leads to a page that by a simple animation shows how to type [...]
